Artist Statement

My intention is to have my paintings resonate and connect with the hearts of my viewers. A connection will be made with others as I make a new connection within myself. Getting my work out into the greater world, will send out energy that we can all share because the theme is universal.

I paint and sculpt spirit boats because they keep me buoyant and lighthearted. The variety of boats show different approaches to this theme. Each boat is as unique as we are from each other. The focus is the greatest source, the universe. The paintings give the viewer pause for refl ection and an invitation to a journey filled with radiant light. These boats are ready to take passengers. I believe we all need our very own spirit boat to move us into the light.

Art has healed my life. After my father died I was profoundly effected by his passing. I realized I needed to change my world for the better. My first step was confronting my father's belongings. As I picked up stacks of his papers I was compelled to keep them instead of tossing them away. I loved his quirky penmanship which was evidence of his near blindness. He worked endlessly on mathematical problems and his notes included games in the form of Chinese Chess (a form more challenging than western chess with a different board and game pieces). These papers inspired and transformed my art. I felt closer to my father by using his papers in my paintings. The creative flurry that followed sustained me and led me to use collage which was a natural way to start work that took on pieces of his identity.

It started as a tribute to Paul and soon expanded into my own journey which I now see as a wide expanse that has no end. While the spirit boats were evolving Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. The storm gave me additional momentum to paint life boats as symbols of hope.

The more I paint and sculpt, the deeper I get into the power of my spirit interpreted by paint and light as language. I love the boat theme. I receive guidance from the elements of life as I put down colors, lines or textures that take on the properties of air, water, fire or earth. This work is about the light of the universe surrounding us as painted light that we access with our own spirit boat.
